I never used Steam so sorry if this is the noobiest question to imagine - but couldn't a Steam user simply upload the new files he got with the update somewhere for Frictional store version users to copy these into their game folder?

Are you asking for illegal content share?
And no, Amnesia.exe has a few new things in it, and it works bound to Steam, which means you need to have updated exe and it needs to connect a Steam account.

I wouldn't consider it "illegal illegal" to exchange additional/altered files that form a free expansion for a game we all paid money for.

Well, it is illegal anyway.
It is in fact the same thing as piracy.

Edit: Just wanted to state that I never accused you of piracy.

Sigh. In my nooby mind I thought

- that the update consists mostly of some new files comparable to custom maps and some altered original files containing some fixes

- that the delay for retail version users is due to problems converting the files for Mac and Linux so that in other words the Windows version was done already.

Therefore, I thought it would be easy to just pass the existing and free patched files that some people got from Steam for the Windows users which would only be able to make use of them if they have a complete version of stock Amnesia. Obviously I was wrong. But I never meant to suggest an act of piracy with my question.

I thought the Justine patch was just bundled with a bugfix patch, but speculation has got me a little interested in the patch in case it does have some surprises.

No...it's not...the expansion is free, it would only be piracy if you'd never paid for Amnesia in the first place

It's only piracy when you're stealing something
