Then the people were stupid, they were like animals or like bacteria.
As people begun to get an answer for the existence of the world and of the life, they believe, that there must be some kind as a god.
An old, elemental force. What have ever been and will never die.
Different religions are then more to practise freedom in humanity (or not).
To do good things in the world (things, what also the Tuurngait says too).
Then you will live in heaven...

I'm an atheist myself, but I can see how religion unites people.
I believe, that if there would be no religion, humans would worship something else; an examplary leader of some sort.
Because people need something to look up to, and live after.
We'd be just as terrible to each other, for different reasons. Atheists, who don't believe in the validity of religions, should particularly agree that terrible acts done in the name of religion are the acts borne of man's nature, not whichever supernatural force.

Without religion, there'd be no change.
Some people use religion to unify, some to spread hatred against others.
Religion is like a political party or a normal group, you just want to be with people who have the same opinion as you. It is a means to an end.
That question is not something you just answer like that. If there was no religion, things would be different, that's sure. Religion is something you call to the way you behave and what do you relate what you believe to. In any religion you worship a leader, someone you believe that has powers beyhond yours. Someone you relate to the things you can't understand. Of course that at the current time, we can totally understand how foolish some things are, from every religion, we can also udnerstand how religion stopped science development, how religion generates wars, stupid wars.
If it is good to believe? Maybe, but as you can see the biggest geniuses, the ones who mostly understand the world don't believe(Example: Albert Einstein). Is that a coincindence? No, it's not. It's not certain that the world would be better or worse with no religions, but it certainly would be different.
Today I dreamt the life I could live forever. You only know that when you feel it for you know not what you like until you've experienced it.
