Stuck near end, game will not progress [Possible Spoilers]

I am having an issue, where the game seems to be stuck and I cannot go forward. I have the Steam version of the game.

I am in the Chancel, pretty much at the end. I have the orb and the tar placed on the pedestal (orb is whole and not glowing) and the gears have been jammed/broken. However, despite these actions, the electric/magic field is still in place and not being absorbed by the orb. I cannot reach the door to the Inner Sanctum.

I really hate getting this far and then not being able to finish. I don't believe I've missed anything. Maybe someone with more knowledge than I can help me get past this point.

You have placed all six parts of the orb?
Can you try to load an earlier save and see it happens again? This is the first I hear about it.

yes me too. You must be doing something wrong. Make sure you have all 6 pieces. If you cannot think of something else try watching a walkthrough of this part and see what the others are doing.

Yes, I have all 6 pieces in there and have already been through the jail sequences and have the severed head with me too. I will try to reload one of the older saves tonight.

I think you also need to start a machine if I remember correctly. Anyway, load a previous save game and if nothing changes watch a walkthrough of that part.

I was able to load an earlier save (had to load one from prior to entering the Cells) and re-place the orb and it worked this time. I didn't do anything extra to make it work. Maybe I put the orb together too early or something before? Dunno. Thanks for the suggestions!
