SSAO lags the hell out of my game.

Hey

I can run Amnesia on 60FPS without SSAO, 30FPS when recording with fraps. The FPS automatically drops to 30 and locks there when I turn SSAO on, even if I have only 4 samples and medium resolution. So what could the problem be? I would really want to play the game with SSAO on.

My specs:

OS: Windows 7 64-bit service pack 1, running on desktop computer
CPU: Intel i5 quad core, 3GHz
Graphics card: Nvidia Geforce GT 545, 3 gigs of memory
RAM: 6 gigs
Hard drive space: 1,5TB

Both my processor and graphics card drivers have been updated to the latest.

Also, when I press "Detect" on the launcher, it says "Card is not listed, assuming medium settings". What does this mean?

Do you have VSync enabled? If yes, disable it. When using Fraps 30fps is normal since this is a fraps option.

When I turn VSync off, the image awfully tears. I wouldn't want this either. Is there a way to eliminate this problem? I play on 1440x900.

Have you tried downgrading the graphics card driver or using beta drivers?

I had this problem before I installed the latest drivers, and after. That was the reason I installed them anyway.

Alright, so. Stuff seems to be balancing on this. Either I turn off Vsync, allowing massive tearing to happen, but keeping fps at solid 60. OR I disable SSAO completely, losing alot of detail on shading, but keeping my fps at a solid 60.

But is there any work-around for this? Any way at all?

Does the 30 FPS happen on the main menu too?

Not sure what to tell you then. Your graphics card should be capable of doing at least 4 samples of SSAO, possibly at most 16 samples. Maybe there's some conflict between a setting in any Nvidia control panels that is telling the drivers to ignore SSAO settings set by the game.

Can't really find anything relevant to "SSAO" in my Nvidia control panel. Then again, it's in Finnish. But if there was something there, I would propably find it.

I'm going to keep experimenting on this matter and balancing my graphics settings. I'm going to have to challenge the computer in order to do that, but hey, if it can run MW3 on a solid 45fps while maxed, it surely can run Amnesia on a solid 60fps.
