Black Screen When Playing Amnesia

It's likely that this problem was already solved, and if it was, I'm sorry for posting a new thread, but if I haven't tried a solution yet, it's probably because I don't understand it and I need someone to walk me through it.

Whenever I launch Amnesia, the white text and buttons are there and are functional, but the background is a solid black. When I start the game, the captions and sound are there, and when the flashback ends a white dot appears in the center of my screen (which I'm assuming is the crosshairs), but my screen is otherwise completely black.

My video driver and DirectX are up to date.

maybe its your graphics card. try to update that. otherwise, im blank on ideas :/
