Windows 7 64-bit. AMD Radeon HD 6520D. Steam is saying all files are validated...
Since it's saying on Steam that the game has no local files, I think something got messed up there. I tried executing the game from the main directory and got this error. (attached)
I tried downloading the trial version but that didn't work either; the same thing happened. I really don't know what to think.

Yes in fact it did. I tried uninstalling the game before, and when I went to reinstall it it said it worked but there was no visible installation process, the button just changed from install to play and that was all. I had issues at first with the conversion process not working, but they seemed to have gotten that fixed.
Edit: I meant they did convert the games, it didn't solve my problem at all....

yes, I figured. I don't think you can find a solution here since Steam is the one who broke the games with this conversion. Try their forums, maybe you can find a solution there. If you do, share a link here so others ca be redirected there.
So upon further effort, I have narrowed down the cause of the problem to one specific room. For whatever reason I cannot load that room. I got everything up to there to work by loading previous saves, and then replayed it to that point which caused the crash. Making progress I suppose.

Yeap, making progress. If you cannot continue at all maybe you can ask the forums for someone to give you a slightly latter save game after the crash room.
I took my save files from this computer and transferred them to another (family desktop) one, and downloaded Penumbra on Steam to that computer. It seems to be working fine on that one, which of course is wonderful! ...naturally I'm also trying to get it to work on my computer still. The save files are completely fine, but loading them is the problem because it causes the game to crash on the laptop.
I'm willing to bet it is driver problems causing it. Maybe an update is in order?
Another interesting tidbit to note is that when I installed it, Steam never asked for the game content conversion. So there's always that.
