Can anyone explain why a GTX 780 is £100 more than a Radeon R9 290? Both cards are arguably equal overall, but the R9 290, can't ignore the £100 difference. Is this because Nvidia are waiting for the 800 series before they update their prices to compete with Radeon?

Possibly because of Nvidia brand; the name gives it the value or R9 290 uses cheaper components. Don't know the real answer.

I would say that in general Nvidia have a slight edge for popularity over AMD, but I don't think it can go down to that because both Nvidia and AMD are great brands equally known.

After looking into a couple of comparisons, it seems that the 780 is overall a slightly better card, and that the R9 290 is a louder card. Still, i'd still say that a £100 price gap is some damn good marketing by AMD.

If I remember correctly the 780 was very good for mining, because it was very stable with that kind of stuff. I'm not that into mining so I don't know much about it but it might have to do with that.
