As I am a massive pedant, I sit here desperately trying to find a way of explaining that my impulse to use a semicolon in that context was valid. Unfortunately, I know it was not. I must steel myself and own this violation. I can only surmise that I was temporarily overcome by a syntactical aphasia, possibly caused by sunspots. In time I may come to forgive myself.
