A tunnel in space? Is it part of a huge spaceship? It's a bit weird. Can anyone explain?

Talking about Dead Space.

The worst idea in a game whose universe was filled with bad ideas was building a ship with a tram system.

How did nobody at engineering went ''well...if anything serious happens to the infrastructure an engineer will have to go fix it manually. If that fails then you have a high speed tram in a pressurized space submarine...yeah no lets just make the ship smaller."
