I want to speak about that, its a very dark point to the graphics in the game.
I have a directx10 nvidia's graphics card, and when I activate "parallax" it only shows bump mapping on the game.
First of all, I have thought it was a "aproximative name" for 3D texture rendering, but it seems than ATI DX11 graphics card owners have the true POM effect activated.

Due to Open gl ? Lack of time to optimise it in directx10 ? nvidia driver sucks ?

I am very curious, so answer mee please !

thanks Big Grin
I can activate the true parallax occlusion mapping effect by changing the value of the line "parallax quality" in the "default_main_settings_high" folder in "launcher" folder of the game.
changing the "0" value to "1"
It works, but it horribly lags (and i have a geforce 260gtx ^^)

the reason of my post is : Why it lags so much ? nvidia ? DX 10 ? both ^^ XD
because in ATI DX11 graphics card, its perfectly fluid.

Yeah the parallax used is fake because the otherone is so slow. THis is probably due some poor optimzation on my part I would think and as we decided only having it as an extra feature I did not put that much time into it.

The shader is easy to edit though, so perhaps someone is up for the task of improving? Wink

I will show you 2 screens who show the difference :

with the "parallax" effect activated, in DX10 (and not DX10.1 be careful),
in facts, its only "bump mapping" :

and, with the true Parallax Occlusion Mapping effect :

You can see the 3D rendering on textures is better on the 2nd pic ^^ (for thoose who dont know what is POM !)
Yes XD ^^ I want to do it !! but actually im only starting my videogame 3D programming school... so I am a "noob" (its subjective lol ^^)

But what is strange, is that ATI's DX11 GC's owners can run it perfectly fine... Good surprise ? XD
and thank you to answer me so fast ^^

by the way, you game is marvellous ^^

maybe we can hope any "shader update" ? If its so easy ?
I am jocking don't worry Big Grin

I'm still impressed of this game, I hope its having a lot of succes ^^

HOLY SH*T !!!

I just activated true parallax occlusion mapping on my Vista laptop (dx10) and it makes an allready beautifull game EVEN MORE awesome.

It"s a pitty really that my laptop can"T handle all that awesomeness and only poops out like 8 to 10 frames per sec Sad

But , oh man ..... just try to start a new game and look at THAT AWESOME FLOOR in the beginning of the level where you wake up.

Everyone with a monster-pc should try THIS.

?

It's lagging with my ATI 5770. Tweak looks nice, but unplayable.

Stragne, one of my frien have an 5850 and it runs at 60 FPS...
So strange effect.

I know than FG is making a level editor of the game, it could be nice if they took a little bit time to add this effect correctly in the game with the level editor update.

Exept if that takes to much time of course.

DO YOU HEAR ME FG ? WE WANT OUR POM !!!! :p

What"S strange about running amnesia at 60fps with POM on ???

I wish i could do THAT Sad

Ayways , here"S another example :

ON (set to 1) :

and ,

OFF (set to 0) :

the left part of the floor is where the effect is the most.

Lol i just tried it . In some parts the fps is nice and stable but when i look around in diff areas the fps just goes down to 1-2fps, crazy slideshow. Is there gonna be an update for this?, would be really cool if you optimize this effect, would make the game even more beautiful.

POM performance is even worse them if you used real geometry like dx11 tessellation. Some games use it only for specific effects like bullet holes (FEAR) or small rocks on the ground (Crysis) theres really no game afaik that use POM for all the textures in the game and the ones that do have for some textures like Stalker lose considerable performance with it on.
