The Thing (1982) is a classic. I have a feeling Penumbra might have taken few inspirations from it.

While "The Thing (1982)" was heavily inspired from "At the Mountains of Madness" by Lovecraft. Full circle I suppose.

Interesting, didn't know that (not very familiar with the works of Lovecraft thus huge hole in culture). I always thought it was some kind of remake of The Thing from Another World (1951). Wikipedia says that The Thing is based on the Who Goes There? novella by John W. Campbell, Jr.

Who Goes There? was published in 1938 while At the Mountains of Madness was published two years earlier, in 1936. I wouldn't even be surprised if he took very heavy influence from it (probably did).

Indeed, that is very possible. All similar plots, so it wouldn't be surprising if each was passed on as influence. And I'm sure it'll continue being passed on.

I would say the best Lovecraft inspired adaptions are "Sátántángo", "Werckmeister Harmonies" and "The Turin Horse" by Béla Tarr. Audiovisual masterpieces about human desolation very deep into the soul. It's not some conventional "horror" instead it's like SOMA a kind of story based disturbance.

You'd be surprised what things are based on what. Forbidden Planet for example, it's literally Shakespear's The Tempest set "INNNN SPAAAAAAAAAACE!" and 'ol Gene then used THAT as a template for Star Trek. Star Wars goes without saying XD, tis a story we've told for centuries in many different languages and ANY CRUDDY LOVEY DOVEY film is just casablanca XD

"It's the AGE OLD story...Droid meets droid. Droid becomes chameleon. Droid loses chameleon, chameleon becomes blob, droid gets blob back again! Blob meets blob, blob goes off with blob, then droid loses blob chameleon AND DROID. Oh, HOW many times have we heard this tale..." XD

There are 36 different dramatic situations that can occur. Thus in general it's not that surprising, that many stories seem to be "the same" all over again. It's always fun to see how other things have been inspired by another's work, though!

SAW 1 is quite good, but such movies are not the sort of horror everybody must have watched. I wanted to recommend non-mainstream horror movies with art and which take serious about the genre. Horror movies that does all right about the genre instead being "popcorn cinema" are always very rare.Dodgy
