Close his cell using the valve next to it. I think it's better to secure the exit first, so that if Malo does break the door down before you can save Marot, you can lead Malo to the other side and finish turning the valve. Since the exit is out in the open it's good to be able to run out quickly, because getting spotted while turning the valve for the exit is easier than getting spotted turning the valve for Marot's cell.

That's hard. Here's how you do it.
There should be a valve next to his cell. Make sure you closed it. After that, open the exit and now run like Satan is fucking chasing you.

Thanks for the responses.

So the game takes place in real time. That would seem to stretch things a little, even considering that some supernatural elements are present.

I would then ask, who would build such an elaborate place, with jail cells and a ceiling crawlspace... and who would collect and lock up these "suitors" for this crazy experiment?

As for what I missed--I think I only saved one of the prisoners--I'm just not going to play this for quite some time again, if ever, esp. considering the permadeath and the high difficulty. That makes for a lot of frustrating repetition for the average gamer (myself included) and really, it's all quite anti-Frictional.

A crawl space is some sort of ventilation shaft, I suppose. Nothing suspicious.
