I suppose you downloaded the trial version of maya since you're limited to one month.
If you register as a student you can get a free I believe 3 year license for non-commercial use which should give you some more learning time.
In regards to learning fast I would suggest getting a book(I learned quickly from "blender for dummies" and certainly there must be an equally useful book available for a known software like maya ) to learn your way and get an overview of everything. Then I suggest either looking into specifik tutorials on character modelling and perhaps even buying another book.

I have been working with Maya and 3ds Max for 10 years (mostly hard surface modeling). If you are mainly interested in modeling I would go for 3ds Max: it is easier to learn and the modeling tools are a lot better.

If you want to touch state of the art in organic modeling you should also use sculpting programs (Mudbox, ZBrush etc.)

btw: The easiest way to build your dinosaur model is "box modeling", most other techniques are more complex.

But I like Blender more so it's all up to your thing.

Jakob, you are a man of greatness. I need more Max users around here.

I'd suggest you get yourself Zbrush R6 and sculpt the entire thing out using Dynamesh, then you can use the new retopo tools in Zbrush called Zremesher, it's a new wonderfull tool that will build a usually wonderfully functioning topology, and if something messes up there are very simple tools that can be used with the remesher to guide it into creating proper topo. You can also UV map and texture your model very easily within Zbrush, it's probably a better option for you than modeling the entire thing out if you've never used a 3D package before.

http://gyazo.com/3b7f61ddfc21209eaef54714958c3d7e

So my idea was circle then with vertex changing it to that form but it takes ages and it is hard to make it like that.

Anyone knows a better idea?

It's hard to tell, but perhaps you should go at the feet backwards. Start from the "toes" and work up. See what you can do about the sphere shape, rather than build the toes off of the sphere. Might make it a bit easier for you to define the shape that way.
