RE: Blandom Snuff

While not depressive related, I came across an interesting question.

How do you explain (a) color to a blind person?

Or how do you explain a certain sound to the deaf.
I've discussed about this topic more than once, and my conclusion was and is that it is impossible.
However it will help, if the person was able to see colors before he or she turned colorblind. Think about that, you can remember the color, even though you might be unable to see it. Same with taste, smell and hearing.

What use is the knowledge of colors for a blind person?

Just the general acquirement of information that you otherwise aren't able to obtain, while others are. The brain has a natural craving for it, curiosity, etc.

How would I explain colors to a blind person? I might explain the scientific meaning behind colors, but of course they would not be able to experience it in any way. I might explain that how things feel or sound different, they also look different. Taste is subjective, and I guess smell too.

In my experience the only people who understand mental illness are the mentally ill.

Depression fucking sucks, I know how that is.

May I ask how a depression is? I don't know if I have it or just my personality...

It's... complicated. Ashtoreth has a good point with that comic, but imagine being perfectly happy one moment, then something really small happens, like maybe someone was rude to you, or you are having problems with your math homework. Now you feel completely and utterly hopeless and worthless, empty, and alone, for no real reason at all. And you stay like that for maybe an hour, maybe the rest of the day, or maybe for the next week. Now I have the added benefit of having anxiety disorder as well, so I spend all that time focused on that one point trying to figure out what I did wrong. On top of that is the difficulty I have making new friends. Seriously, I only recently learned that walking up to people to talk to them is an acceptable thing to do. Before that, I always thought I'd be imposing on them and it was the source of much anxiety.

If you're a teenager, it shouldn't really be a problem unless you are absolutely fixated on your feelings. Because your emotions in flux, mild depression episodes in sparse intervals are normal. Though, if you have regular thoughts of suicide, seek help. Seriously.

Thanks for the insight.

I didn't know that was what depression was, though I thought I had it. I'm more of the case where I look into the future and can't see anything hopeful for me, but I am capable of getting over small things and enjoying the current day. Is this another type of mental illness?

There is no curiosty in something that I cannot perceive on my own. That knowledge is totally superfluous as I cannot do anything with it.

@ Froge: I'm not a psychiatrist, so I can only share personal experience, not diagnose your problems. Sorry, if you feel like you need help then you should seek a professional.

Oh shit, speaking of depression, the winter depression awaits.
Day gets shorter night after night, while the time of darkness gets longer.
I'll be waiting with joy the day and point, when the sun does not rise or settle.
